About this role

Data Operations Engineering (DOE)

When BlackRock was started in 1988, its founders envisioned a company that combined the best of financial services with cutting edge technology. They imagined a business that would provide financial services to clients as well as technology services to other financial firms. The result of their vision is Aladdin, our industry leading, end-to-end investment management platform. With assets valued over USD $7 trillion managed on Aladdin, our technology empowers millions of investors to save for retirement, pay for college, buy a home and improve their financial wellbeing.

Data is at the heart of Aladdin and increasingly the ability to consume, store, analyze and gain insight from data has become a key component of our competitive advantage. The DOE team is responsible for the data ecosystem within BlackRock. Our goal is to build and maintain a leading-edge data platform that provides highly available, consistent data of the highest quality for all users of the platform, notably investors, operations teams and data scientists. We focus on evolving our platform to deliver exponential scale to the firm, powering the future growth of Aladdin.

DataOps Engineers at BlackRock get to experience working at one of the most recognized financial companies in the world while being part of a software development team responsible for next generation technologies and solutions. Our engineers design and build large scale data storage, computation and distribution systems. They partner with data and analytics experts to deliver high quality analytical and derived data to our consumers.

We are looking for data engineers and leaders who like to innovate and seek complex problems. We recognize that strength comes from diversity and will embrace your unique skills, curiosity, drive, and passion while giving you the opportunity to grow technically and as an individual. We are committed to open source and we regularly give our work back to the community. Engineers looking to work in the areas of orchestration, data modeling, data pipelines, APIs, storage, distribution, distributed computation, consumption and infrastructure are ideal candidates.

Responsibilities

We are in the midst of transitioning from building a centralized Aladdin Data & Analytics Factory to creating an enterprise data platform for the entire firm and all of our clients that connects to all Aladdin properties. This investment will accelerate data on boarding time, guarantee data consistency across all consumption points (ie apps, APIs, and client data warehouses) and introduce distribution entitlement control points and the entitlement utilization reporting at the granularity vendors and clients require today.

The governance & data quality chapter lead will oversee a work stream in our data platform strategy that will encompass the technical ownership of the following systems & responsibilities:

Governance Tooling & Services: As the next generation data platforms and services fabric is established it is crucial that strong process and associated tooling is developed in the metadata management arena. This chapter lead will oversee the strategic roadmap and development for these capabilities - ranging from data registration, cataloging, provenance and entitlement frameworks and services enabling all Aladdin data service stakeholders including providers, custodians and consumers.

Data Quality Architecture & Service Frameworks: The governance and data quality engineering chapter lead will partner with leadership from amongst data owners, stewards, operations and pipeline engineering teams - owning the strategy and delivery of a heuristic data quality and audit framework portfolio for 3rd party, Aladdin and client data traversing the Enterprise Data Platform portfolio. This DQ information will drive exception management, operational rigor and data provenance metadata to ensure robust and compliant delivery of the entire data estate for all data constituents and clients.

Engineering Leadership & Architecture Council: This role will provide regional engineering leadership within the broader DPS organization, and will be a member of the Data Platform and Factory Architecture Council helping to establish standards and principles throughout the data platform architecture, acquisition, ingestion, transformation and delivery disciplines.

Knowledge & Experience
  • BA/BS in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience
  • At least 15+ years' experience as a data architect, engineer and strategic leader
  • Familiarity with broader data architecture trends including benefits and challenges of lakehouse, mesh and data fabric transformations and implementations
  • Prior strategy and implementation experience with large scale metadata service deployments -preference towards use open standards (Dublin Core, DCAT, Prov-O) and deployment for B2B interoperability
  • Experience in the implementation of data privacy and entitlement tools and frameworks, with preference towards inter-business exchange policies and enforcement engines
  • Familiarity with scaled agile, devops and data ops development models and organizational structures
  • Ability to operate in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a can-do attitude under challenging circumstances
  • Strong presence with clients
  • Inquisitive leader who will bring new ideas that challenge the status quo
  • Ability to navigate a large, highly matrixed organization
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics or Statistics
